Comments: From a very clean clone of the master cassettes. These tapes are the source for every Bradford release that you have heard. This is a direct transfer from the first generation tapes which date from 1971.

The recording includes all tune-ups and band chatter between tracks. The boys are in a playful mood, as you can tell by their interaction with the audience, which is very quiet during the songs. There is no appreciable hiss. The taper also used 60 minute cassettes, 30 minutes to a side, which is obvious by the breaks.

- 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene': The recording begins with the first few notes of the song. I
especially like Roger's scream since it is--by my count--a full 19 seconds long!
- 'Fat Old Sun': A great jam session. Vocals are not perfectly clear, but you can hear every word.      There are some interesting guitar licks during the tune-ups.
- 'Set The Controls': The first tape flip occurs during the intro. After the song, Roger introduces    'Atom Heart Mother' then says the band is going to take a break, followed by what sounds like
"then we're going to have a drink."
- 'Atom Heart Mother': During the intro, there are several pops which sound as if they might have
been due to a loose microphone lead.
- 'Echoes': The opening pings to this "new piece" just pierces your skull.
- 'Cymbaline': The "footsteps" sequence goes on for quite a while. The third and final tape flip
   occurs during this sequence.
- 'One Of These Days': David introduces this new song using its full title. This was the second
performance of this song, the first was at the BBC 0n 30 September.
- 'A Saucerful Of Secrets': The final break in the tape occurs prior to 'Celestial Voices'.

As for the recording, wow. I'm speechless.
As for what I did, a few hard line frequencies needed to be controlled, then slightly enhanced and maximized.
As for why I did it, the ultimate hope of having it be even more enjoyable for me to listen to. It is indeed.
As for sharing, that's for you to decide.

*** Beechwoods' Transfer Notes ***

This is the second in our Beechwoods / LPP series of Marbal tape transfers. Germersheim 1972 being the first. Marbal recorded his first Floyd show in February 1971, onto cassette. He no longer has the master cassette, but he made backups to both cassette and ¼" reel to reel sometime around 1981, and this is from his reel to reel copy of the show.

Versus the cassette, the reel sounded more open and so it was this that we decided to use as the source of this transfer.

Marbal was fastidious in the way he labeled his tapes. This one was numbered 'Reel 29' or in German 'Band 29'. We liked the sound of that, and so have adopted it as the name of this release.

In total I did 5 transfers of this tape. When working with old tapes I find it useful to try the tape on different machines and to work out the best source by ear.  After reviewing, the first 3 transfers were discarded. Transfer 4 sounded great, but there were occasional spots of bleed-through where the signal from the adjacent track was audible, and so a fifth transfer was done using the reverse play heads on the RT707. Evidently the alignment of these heads were slightly different to the forward-play heads, so the bleed-through was mostly gone but the transfer wasn't quite as open as the 4th transfer. Ultimately we compiled the best product by using the 5th transfer to patch the relevant bleed-through segments on the slightly better Transfer 4.

Marbal's reel was a mono transfer, recorded on one of 4 tracks laid down onto his ¼" tape. Old tape-heads will remember the way tape-decks would allow you to selectively record just one mono, or two stereo tracks to a side of tape in a single pass. Recording 4 mono tracks meant your tape went twice as far. So even mono recordings can experience bleed through!

Little Pieces worked with these raw transfers.

*** Littlepieces' Mastering Notes ***

This high resolution transfer is from the same 1st gen reel that Marbal torrented on Yeeshkul several years ago.  As Beechwood indicated the final solution was to use the original Pioneer RT707 transfer and patch the extended segments of bleed over with the reverse playback transfer.  I maximized the use of the superior Pioneer transfer by manually spectral cleaning segments of bleed over when possible.  Generally, when the bleed-through segments were too long and/or continuous for spectral cleaning, then the segment was patched with transfer 5. The process was a pain in the ass but it was the only way to retain and use the most of the superior transfer.

I would describe this recording as having three sections of different fidelity.  The first section is to near the end of Embryo about 33m into the recording.  It starts with the beginning of AD having some fluctuating levels and not quite as strong SQ as the rest of the section.  After AD stabilizes, this 1st section from about 3-4m to 33m has the best SQ in this recording.  The 2nd section begins near the end of Embryo ~33m and ends near the middle of AHM.  This section begins with a subtle falling off of the upper half which eventually becomes easily apparent.  The third section begins near the middle of AHM when the upper half falls off more and some lower frequencies, sub 200Hz, begin to be over-driven periodically.

Marbal's wishes were to improve this recording including the use of EQ to achieve results.  As usual the objective was to lift the fidelity of the recording while maintaining a natural sound quality.

As indicated the 1st section started with AD having level differences and some drop outs. The levels were smoothed and the dropouts repaired or improved and it's upper half was EQ'd variably in order to make it more consistent with the rest of the recording.  The levels of a big drop out at ~4:47m of AD were brought up significantly and smoothed in order to diminish its prominence.  The remainder of this 1st section to ~33m had some modest selective increases to the upper end.

The second section, which ends during the first half of AHM, required more and more increase to the upper half as it continued to fall off. The recording accepted this EQ very well and mostly obscured the differences between the first section and this second section.

The third section begins during the first half of AHM and required more increase to the upper half but it reached a point where further increases were no longer appropriate.  In addition this section had some of its sub 200Hz levels selectively reduced to help moderate the over-driven parts that began in this third section.  This also improved the mix somewhat since the upper half could not be increased any further without adversely effecting the recording.

Apparent throughout most of the recording particularly during quieter segments is a hum at various levels around 100Hz.  This was selectively reduced throughout the recording and is no longer prominent.

Throughout the recording minor dropouts were repaired or improved and the gain increased on some segments as well as noise disturbances removed manually.

On all tracks, I rolled off some hiss varying my approach according to the level and characteristics of the segment while being careful not to encroach on the harmonics.

Finally, I adjusted the speed as it was fast throughout the recording.

A couple of notes:

- There is 84s more audience between AHM and AHM reprise than the previous master torrent.
- Sounds like inside cut at 8:17m of STC.
- Interesting artifact that becomes apparent after the fall off of the upper half begins. A deficit or clearing is often visible on the Spectrograph or Spectral between 3-4k.  An example is during the footstep sequence on Cymbaline.
- Pretty Naked Women are good.

*** Marbal's Recollections ***

It was also a very cold day. The Stadthalle is a small venue, not comparable with the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt.  The little hall was very overheated due to outside weather conditions & in the beginning you can hear the crowd: "Heizung aus!, Heizung aus!" which means: "Heating off!".  Then at the beginning another comment from a friend of mine: "Hey seid mal ein bißchen leise" which means "Please keep a little more quiet" to the people around us showing to our recorder which was respected then most of the time.

After a few songs there was a little talking again about the comparison to Deep Purple which we've seen there before: "Deep Purple ist nichts dagegen - nichts dagegen? - Deep Purple ist SCHEISS dagegen!" which translates like this: "Deep Purple is nothing against this - nothing against this? - Deep Purple is SHIT against this!"

And so it was. Pink Floyd blew us away in a style which was incredible & for me only comparable with the Nektar show from 11.11.70.

It was an incredible sound & light in concert....

*** Note ***

Readers should not forget that ZDF arts show Aspekte recorded segments of the Offenbach show for broadcast on the 3rd March 1971, and that this footage was shared with collectors on the 'A Hamburg Moment' DVD, in stunning quality. Many thanks go to Marek and Pict who made that footage available. Stills from that DVD have been used to create the artwork for this release. Thank you.

Notes:

Recorder 1 has speed fluctuations during the first part of AHM due to tape damage which fluctuations I didn't even try to address. The master tapes seem not to have been preserved that well, but it has powerful, upfront mono (!) sound as well as a bit of tape hiss (that's right folks, the music breathes). SQ is VG+ almost pushing EX- and Nick's drums can be heard very well as well as the other instruments. In short, it's among the best of the 1970 tape sources.

Recorder 2 ASoS was speed corrected with a 104.3 stretch, The Embryo 105.9 (fluctuations from 7:15 till the end)
Recorder 2 here comes from an damaged tape, which damage gets worse towards the end, it suffers from background noise, tape bleed-through and speed fluctuations. SQ is VG at best.

This was originally released as a bonus on the bootleg "An Amateur Wouldn't Do This" - FA031.

This low gen cassette for 1970.09.27 sounds better than anything I've heard that has been previously
circulating. I think you will enjoy it very much. Also, notice that there are some versions of this date circulating that have AHM attached to it. That version should not be from this date since it contains no orchestra and they have been reported to have used an orchestra this day, therefore we have not included this song.

No processing or noise reduction has been applied. It is as raw as the day it was taped.

Magna Qualitas Records is proud to present "Since We Were Teenagers", this fully restored and remastered recording from Santa Monica as our fourth release.  Due to our continuing work on everything related to Zabriskie Point, which led to the new revision of the Omayyad album, we've decided to complete the restoration of this excellent recording.  GBC torrented this recording (provided by Rudy and M.M.) originally a while back, and his notes reflect the many instances of dropouts, damages and cuts in the tape.  All this has been restored here using pieces of other shows or relocating pieces from this show.

Originally Grantchester Meadows only ran about 30 seconds.  Apparently that is where the taper started recording.  We have patched the majority of the song in from the previous show in San Francisco on April 29, but since the very beginning of that fades in we decided to restore that as well from the KQED tape.  We wanted the birds before the song to be there.  The 30 seconds of the song that existed on the tape for this show are all there, but now the whole song exists in a form that is nearly impossible to tell its from more than one show.  from 0 to 0:34 April 30 - KQED.  From 0:34 to 7:13 April 29 - Fillmore East.  From 7:13 to 7:37 (end) May 1 - Santa Monica

Astronomy Domine had a small part missing due to a damaged portion of the tape.  This was patched with a piece from slightly earlier in the song.  The buildup was a bit oversaturated and was all at one continuous loud volume, so this was readjusted to better reflect the gradually increasing intensity of the song.

The original little patch from Santa Monica  1970-10-23 is still in place in Cymbaline.  It was done so well I can't even tell where it is, so why mess with perfection?

A dull spot in the tape at about 14 minutes into The Amazing Pudding was repaired.

The missing part of Careful was spliced in from Port Talbot 1969-12-06, curiously this concert was during the Sessions for Zabriskie Point. We searched long and hard through dozens of shows to find a tape where the performance was similar enough to the one at Santa Monica (and with similar sound quality) to fill the missing section.  Quite a lot was missing, so it had to be done. The patch exists from 2:33 to 3:48.

Drop-outs and other anomalies were cleaned up or otherwise repaired.  The volume of the whole thing was adjusted in various places to make the dynamics more pleasant, and because the tape sounds like the taper was adjusting the gain on the fly as the show went on in order to compensate for very quiet passages.  A lot of the between song banter and tuneups and the tape effects during Cymbaline were very quiet, so they were brought up a bit.  The distorted sections of the show were carefully restored to avoid a lot of the oversaturation they originally contained.  Several spots where the high end dulled down a bit, likely from deterioration of the master, were EQd separately and patched in in order to compensate for the tonal changes.  Noise Reduction was carefully applied in three stages, and the whole thing now appears for the first time in stereo due to the usage of a very sophisticated and well sounding (although freely available) stereo processing plugin.  The tape flips were all patched by relocating audience from different parts of the show so the whole thing is now a continuous piece for each set.

This release is certainly not perfect.  Many wrinkles and crumples were present in the master tape, and although we did our best, there's not a lot that can be done to fix them.  It is, however, probably the best it has ever sounded since we were teenagers, maybe even as it ever will...

RE-UP: Pink Floyd live in San Francisco 1970 - 2CD - April 29 (not KQED show!) - soundboard

Recorded live 29 April 1970 at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, California. (Be careful not to confuse this set with the Floyd's studio appearance at KQED, which was videotaped earlier on the same day and which has been widely circulated.)

This show has been circulating for many years as an incomplete soundboard recording in excellent quality, missing the beginning of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and all but the first minutes of "A Saucerful of Secrets". It has been one of the most bootlegged concerts in Pink Floyd's career, with many previous RoIOs released under real and fictitious dates (one of the most common claiming to be live at Winterland on 21 October 1970). However, Interstellar Encore trumped those earlier releases by interpolating a second source, recorded from the audience and also in excellent quality, that includes the full "A Saucerful of Secrets" and the previously-unknown encore, a powerful performance of "Interstellar Overdrive" (which gives this RoIO its title). Also included are some between-song conversations which were missing on earlier releases. Interstellar Encore does not, however, include the first half of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", which reportedly is on the audience source but suffers from severe tape speed problems.

Harvested Records has remastered this show, removing a chirping noise that plagues certain sections of the recording, and released it as Interstellar Fillmore. Other CDR releases of this show are numerous, and the complete "second source" (audience tape) is available in Pink Floyd trading circles, though hard to find.

**Recording notes**
Interesting set with many rarely performed songs. TE is most unique featuring extensive slide guitar arrangements. In fact Dave is on the slide at some point in every song but AD this night.

The sound quality of the live mix increases gradually throughout the show. Classic live sound issues - vocals kind of buried at first and things kind of muddy in general with lots of bass and low room frequencies. Then everything really cleans up by the end of STCFTHOTS and gets even more pristine after that.
It's possible that the taper was concealing the mic during parts of the show, causing the muffled sound. There's a spot in TAP drum solo that sounds like the mic being unconcealed for a few seconds, for example.

As for this recording, it sounds like the master tape was pretty overdriven for the first part of AD. After 4 mins or so it calms down but all the loud sections are still squashed a bit. The high end starts rolling off above 2k and is rather subdued by 8k. To bring this in correct balance would have brought out an offensive amount of tape hiss and it was not possible with current NR technology to remove the hiss without removing music content.

Some of the startup sounds really sound like open reel. Portable reels were 5". That would be 600', which is 30min at 3.75ips and would explain losing the end of AHM. Our taper would be switching reels at least every other song and probably be concerned about conserving tape.

**Mastering notes**
This was originally a mono recording subsequently dubbed on stereo equipment. The L ch had slightly better high frequency content and dynamics vs. the R. There was also a varying small phase discrepancy between channels. Therefore only the L ch was used for this mono remaster.

First, I pitch corrected this with Serato PnT plugin. The original was 17c sharp.

There were 2 short repeated sections: 8:16 into STCFTHOTS and 8:49 into MTFM - likely where the intact master was stopped, wound back and restarted to accommodate a tape flip on the dubbing deck in an earlier generation.

There were many drop outs throughout (.5 to 1.5sec in length) but especially in CWTAE, TE & MTFM. Some of these still contained enough of a trace of the recording to boost the gain and recover. Others had to be patched using pieces from other parts of the song. The only use of noise reduction (Digidesign DINR) on this recording is on 21 of these little pieces. Since I had to crank up the gain sometimes as much as 30db on these parts, if I hadn't used NR you would get blasted by this ungodly wall of hiss and rumble for half a second.

There were many gain changes throughout the recording as well. Typical scene: signal jumps 4db lower for 10 sec, then back, then up 3db for 4 sec, then back, then up 7db for 2 sec then a .5 sec burst of completely saturated signal, then it goes 30db low for 1.2 sec then up to a different nominal level... you get the idea.

There are still spots where you might hear the background noise suddenly change or the sound falter for a moment. The decision was always to keep an imperfect correction if patching it instead would alter the performance.

The first 3.4 sec of BMT and the last 19.1 sec of TAP have been reconstructed using pieces from other parts of the songs. These songs are incomplete on the source tape. This was done to eliminate the distraction of an abrupt cut. Some mechanical noises (stops and pauses) from either the master or subsequent generations have been removed as they tended to be a distraction from the music. These are preserved in the raw files. No moments of performance from the source tape have been sacrificed for production decisions at any time.

Some EQing was needed. This was accomplished as follows:

In the 1st 3 tracks, some 189Hz was attenuated using the UA Precision Mastering EQ. A somewhat aggressive move but there was so much saturation in this range in these 3 tracks that I was able to increase the overall level to match the rest of the show by doing this.

At this point the program is at it's maximum level (before clipping) on a track. The high end starts rolling off above 2k and is rather subdued by 8k so I want to increase these frequencies. I created a new track with a copy of the program (perfectly in sync/phase with the original to the sample - regardless of any processing used). On this I filtered out everything except the frequency range I wanted to increase. I then mixed this into the main track at 6.1%. Remember that the original track was at maximum level. I'm only using the extra headroom in the frequency range that I want to add - and since it was low in the first place, there's room to add these frequencies without clipping or having to turn the original down to accommodate. The eq was the UA Precision Mastering Multiband (no compression, just crossover features used for eq).

Sound quality is C- (beginning of show & loud parts) to C+

DIGITAL LUNATICS present:
Sycopated Pandemonium - a look at early Pink Floyd

Setlist:   (disc 1)

----------1968.05.23 (early set) Paradiso, Amsterdam - low gen source-----

01 - tuneups                                     01:14:69
02 - Let There Be More Light                     07:26:13
03 - Interstellar Overdrive                      11:14:58
04 - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun  12:27:62
05 - tuneups                                     00:52:07
06 - A Saucerful Of Secrets                      14:09:12

notes:
This is likely the first live performence of A Saucerful Of Secrets (depending on the date of a German TV clip). Historic, eh? Personally,
one of my favorite performances. For the time period in which this was recorded, a decent recording indeed. And also is the centerpiece of
this little project.

Moving on...

----------"1966 Syd Home Demo"-------------------------------------------

07 - Interstellar Overdrive                      06:21:34

notes:
Unfortunately, this puppy is reputed - by some very "higher ups" in the Syd collectors food chain - to be a fake. :(

----------1968.06.25 Picadilly Studios, London - BBC appearance----------

08 - Massed Gadgets Of Hercules (early Saucerful) 06:40:69

notes:
BBC appearance, early performence of Saucerful. Not sure why the name is as it is, since they were calling it Saucerful the month
before ... but whatever. Nice source.

----------1967.01.20 Mike Leonard's house, North London-------------------

09 - Lets Roll Another One             03:02:61

notes;
Often said to be from "66/10/31", that is not true. Recorded by Irene Winsby, during a rehearsal at Mr. Leonard's house. This new
information comes from very knowledgable Syd collectors, and is finally correct. It's almost certain that no recordings circulate
from that 66/10/31 private recording session!!

As interesting as the recording is, it is unfortunately borderline atrocious. If there even were any, lyrics are unintelligible.

----------1967 - studio sessions-------------------------------------------

10 - Candy And A Currant Bun - drug lyrics         01:58:00
11 - Candy And A Currant Bun - clean lyrics        02:42:72

notes:
Two studio versions of this b-side, one with the drug lyrics, one with wholesome clean lyrics that your grandma would allow ... :)

The drug lyrics version wasn't officially released (no way would the "higher ups" allow that sort ... ), and is said to be sourced
from a studio acetate. Kudos to that fine fellow who leaked it.

They both apparantly cull from the same instrumental backing track, with the first version edited a bit.

I won't comment on the recording dates - I have a feeling that a book about to be published will set the records straight on that.

This concludes your tour of disc one.

Setlist:   (disc 2)

----------1968.05.23 (late set) Paradiso, Amsterdam - low gen source-------

01 - tuneups                                          00:34:24
02 - Keep Smiling People                              10:09:00
03 - tuneups                                          01:04:19
04 - Let There Be More Light                          08:04:58
05 - tuneups                                          01:14:11
06 - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun        12:34:59
07 - tuneups                                          00:51:30
08 - Flaming                                          04:59:26
09 - tuneups                                          00:45:49
10 - A Saucerful Of Secrets                           12:41:59

notes:
the complete late show from this date. Keep Smiling People is an unrecorded instrumental that has some similarities with 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene'. Accolades of this are not limited to: early performence of Saucerful (possibly the 2nd time ever played live) and two
fairly rare songs in live form. Another of my favorite shows, and also a nice recording considering the shoddy equipment available in those days.

----------1968.06.25 Picadilly Studios, London--------------------------

11 - Murderistic Woman                                02:20:43

notes:
another early variation of what would become 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene'.

----------1968.12.28 Margriethal Jaarburs, Utrecht---------------------

12 - Careful With That Axe, Eugene                    08:00:39

notes:
Apparantly the first circulating recording of 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' as most of us know it.

----------1969.04.14 Royal Festival Hall, London------------------------

13 - Beset By Creatures Of The Deep                    08:26:16

notes:
Live variation of Axe, as was part of the Man & Journey suites.

----------What is this?--------------------------------------------------

14 - bonus track.  some will recognise it immediately. For the sake of keeping up the illusion of this being a decent surprise,
please don't mention what this is to the list(s), mmmkay?

Well, that's all folks.

Notes: great show by Roger and Co., but that's no surprise..... wasn't gonna go this time around, but
3 days before the show, I stumbled upon a great seat, front row of club level 215 and it wasn't $280!!
so with the promise of an unobstructed view and elevation roughly equal to the hanging stacks,
I decided to pull the trigger.... as far as the recording goes, there is some chatter here and there
and some clapping, including some attempts by my seatmates to "clap in time" with some of the beats,
but not horrible.... the funniest crowd chatter on this tape would be courtesy of my seatmate to my
right, a chick (who turned out to be really nice) that leaned in and asked me if I had any weed, and
that she had nachos to bargain with!!! I never told her I was recording, but if she happens to come
across this tape, she'll know exactly who the taper was... :-)

Comments: This was the first time at this venue, and overall, the acoustics were better
than average for a "hockey" arena, and the recording of this fantastic show came out
really well(IMHO). Recorded from sec.202, 3 rows off the floor, 15' stage right of the
soundboard. Nice sound from that location. The people around the recorder were pretty
well behaved, and very excited throughout most of the center.

Final wall show for me unless I can go again across the pond.  After last night's
complete failure I had to nake this one good.  The previous night I haf equipment
failure that turned out to be bad batteries.  Kudos to Nick for helping me troubleshoot
things from across the country and the guys at guitar center for letting me buy and
return a replacement recorder.  My backup was lent out to record other shows and was in
Hawaii.  I had 3rd row tickets and planned to roll from those seats but decided the
recording was more important.  My partner in crime, Dave convinced the third couple
we asked to swap seats.  They were thrilled and so was I.  Here is the results of my
efforts.

Notes: nice, clear recording.... the dynamics are all over the place, so I just left this as is, as the loudest part of the show on the recording was about where you'd like it to be normally.... I also had the levels turned up just a little too high at the beginning, did not expect it to be that loud, but adjusted down within a minute.... in that vein, there are some pops that I took to be the result of overloading, but I've since listened to a couple of other recordings from this tour, and they also have the same pops, so I guess it's probably the flash pots??....

Comments:
Third night of four at Chicago's United Center, the fifth date of "The Wall" tour.  I'm not sure I can add anything that hasn't already been written; the show was visually and sonically spectacular, and the musicianship impeccable.  I went in with relatively low expectations, with visions of the 1990 Berlin Wall debacle in my mind, and was astounded.  To put it mildly, this show was worth the 30-year wait.

Truthfully, I am pretty sure I haven't listened to this album since about 1986; I played it endlessly throughout my adolescence and really burned myself out on it.  It turns out that it's actually pretty good!

 notes (original notes from taper):
---------
* My Edirol mic-in is broken, so I couldn't use my standard CSB microphones. Had to use the internal mics for the Edirol recorder. Placed it in my right breast pocket. Turned out better than I expected, all things considered.

* Drop-outs during In The Flesh and Another Brick In The Wall (Part I) while I try and fix my mics, which are what I thought was malfunctioning at the time.

* You can hear the dude behind me try and pick a fight with me because I won't sit down during Hey You. Sorry, not much I could do about that.
