Here's a real rarity for you: a modern Floyd concert where "Money" was NOT played! Instead we are treated to a stellar workout of Mr. Gilmour's two solo albums. This 2nd generation tape is another show from my days of dealing with the German tape trading circuit.

Notes: There is a slight glitch during "Murder" due to a quick tape flip. No noise reduction or EQ was used.

NEW: Pink Floyd "French TV collection 1968 - 1969" - 1DVD

PINK FLOYD - French TV 1968-1969

format: PAL
ratio : 4:3

length: 66 min
sub-titles : English

BOUTON ROUGE (broadcast 24Feb68)

SURPRISE PARTIE (broadcast 31Dec68)
- Let There Be More Light

FORUM MUSIQUES (broadcast 15Feb69)
- Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
- A Saucerful Of Secrets

This DVD was received from an anonymous fan without any info
about the lineage, but the quality of these rare TV archives
is superb! This is the very first time that the footage from
Samedi Et Compagnie and Forum Musiques surfaces, as well as
the 4th song the Floyd played at Bouton Rouge (Let There Be
More Light), making the Floyd performance from Bouton Rouge
available in its complete form, for the first time.

And even if the rest of the Bouton Rouge show, as well as
the live performances from Tous En Scene and Surprise Partie,
were available previously, they are presented here without
any logo, and with better video and audio quality than the
previous versions.

During the French spoken parts (band introductions and the
David Gilmour interview during Forum Musiques), English
sub-titles are available.

Last but not least, some extremely rare black & white promo
videos from that era are also included as bonus, even if
they are not mentioned in the artwork.

Don't miss it, this is a MUST HAVE !

Shot on a tripod from the left balcony, Mal was able to capture a good part of Pink Floyd rehearsing The Wall at Earl's Court. The tape has faired well over the years and I was able to pull off a pretty decent transfer from this VHS relic. I tweaked the image a bit adding a tad of contrast and brightness to deepen the blacks without losing any of the details.

Please note that during "Goodbye Blue Sky" the camera zooms in to focus on the images on the screen. The camera remains here until the start of "One of My Turns" so unfortunately "Empty Spaces" and "Young Lust" do not show any images of the stage or musicians. In fact, the latter only features the lights on Mr Screen and I'm assuming that the camera was left shooting on the tripod without being checked until a few sonngs later. Anyone who doesn't want to sit through this can simply advance to the next track.

This DVD contains the full contents of the master VHS tape. The only time I added short dissolves was to cut out the points where the camera was paused and then started again, causing severe tape glitches and audio distortion.

notes:
This is the second night of a six show stint at Earl's Court.  This comes from the master
tapes and sounds great to my ears... nice, clear, and crispy.  There have been some small
fades applied in a couple places that must have happened somewhere down the lineage, not by
myself.  I tend to think this happened somewhere in the DAT gens but this is only a guess.

RE-UP: Pink Floyd live in Montreal 1977 - 3CD - July 6

Date:July 6th, 1977
Band:Pink Floyd
RoIO:"Roar Ends"
Venue:Olympic Stadium
Place:Montreal,Quebec, Canada
Tracks:(14)
Total Length:151:05

Description:Review: Roar Ends

This is one of my favorite concerts, and the Siréne guys have done well. The sound quality is excellent and this show, in a snapshot, illustrates what the Pink Floyd had become.
This show and the July 4 Madison Square Garden CD show how their fans had changed from just enjoying the ride to being demanding and obnoxious.
In "Pigs on the Wing, Pt. 2" Roger berates fans for "shooting off fireworks and shouting and screaming" and you can't blame him.
At the end of "Money" he urges the crowd to "take it easy" and "don't worry about it, I don't...well I do, but I wish I didn't", to "Just cause there's a few assholes down front doesn't mean everbody has to get upset".
At the start of "Us and Them" Roger urges "this is a quiet song so let's get quiet and try to end this thing peacefully". When they end with a blues number, something that hadn't been done for years he says "We're not noted as a blues band but we're just going to play a slow blues number so everyone can calm down".
The songs are superb, this is the last set of the '77 tour and if you compare the earlier '77 concerts with this one they have pulled it all together. Really good and tight ending to "Pigs, 3 different ones" where Rodger alledgedly spits on a fan and taunts "Come Boy".
This is the same recording as the Ayanami recording "The End of Animals", though this one, being spread over 3 discs contains more audience. At one point the taper urges someone to stick around.
A bit later the second person, apparently becoming aware that the taper is taping the concert asks to meet him later, which goes like this, "I live in Toronto".."Huh".."I live in Toronto"..."that's not a problem".
Azimuth Coordinator Part II is a differnt recording and is the same as "Fireworks in the Canadian Woods". This is my summary of these CDs; Azimuth Coordinator is nice since you are in the middle of the audience, at times during "Us and Them" the music is drowned out by the crowd noise.
But the blues number is not on these two discs, you find it on the end of Azimuth Coordinator Part III.
"Fireworks in the Canadian Woods" is from the same source but contains more audience, where you hear people yelling "Echoes", Astronomy Domine", "The Embryo", and "Pink Floyd is God".
Unfortunately the blues number fades out before, the audience starts to boo because the equipment is being taken apart, with the woman yelling "F**k you" and "Booooo". "Roar Ends" and "The End of Animals" are from a different source than "Azimuth Coordinator" and "Fireworks".
This source has a better sound quality and is complete. But where, on "Azimuth" and "Fireworks" the "F**k You" is right next to the taper on "Roar Ends" and "The End of Animals" this is far in the distance. For sound quality "Roar Ends" and "The End of Animals" are preferred, for that middle of the audience feeling "Azimuth" and "Fireworks" are better.
All are truly awesome.

Notes: A very nice recording. The sound quality is excellent and
it's a stereo recording. I'd give it an Ex- since there are some clap
happy folks near the taper, but not to the point of distraction. The
taper also bumps the mics a few times.
Within 10 seconds the fireworks start!  Did someone plan this?
Do I detect the hand of David Gilmour in this? It's almost maddening
thinking of it from Roger's perspective. The fireworks start again in
the beginning of Dogs, then again in PoTW2. Roger lovingly calls this
guy a "shitbag".  The performance is electric!  Dave's solo during
Pigs 3DO is amazing! There are about a hundred highlights during this
show in my opinion, but you'll have to check it out for yourself.

Got this in a trade. An excellent show from the tail end of the
1977 Animals tour (second MSG show). Nice and clear. Some level
fluctuations during song transitions. Small cut around 2:00 into
"Us and Them". According to the person who traded this to me,
this is supposedly a speed corrected version of IN THE GRASSLANDS
AWAY, redone and released by Sirene.

PRRP: Have a Cigar version is closer to proper speed but trails off after 18,000Hz more than this version.
Both have step-wise processing artifact after 16,000Hz but Have a Cigar verion goes to zero and
this version does not. This version is clipped and runs too fast but both problems were corrected.

Comments: Well now, where to begin. This recording is from 7 May, it is not not the fake that has been floating around, edited and disguised to be something that it is not. Now that that is out of the way ...

There is a fair amount of hiss and mic saturation during the loudest riffs. At times, it sounds as if Roger has his mic in his mouth. It doesn't make this recording unlistenable, but it is there and can be annoying.

As for the performance, the boys definitely messed up a lot that night! While this was not their best performance of the tour, you can tell they had fun. 'SOYCD (Pts. VI-IX)' is very good, clocking in at almost 23 minutes. 'Pigs (Three Different Ones)' is one of the longer versions from the tour.

There is a small cut between 'SOYCD (Pts. I-V)' and 'Welcome To The Machine'. There also seems to be a different source used for the encore. Not confirmed, but possible. Roger squeals "30-10" or "32" during 'Pigs (Three Different Ones)', third verse.

The sound quality is VG for most of the tape. The fun performance, however, makes this a solid 7/10 in overall quality. Not the best 1977 recording out there, but it's probably from a lower generation recording. I think the Money recording may be from the same taper, but he moved slightly and swapped out tapes. And, the tape that he used was a tape with other music already on it, which bleeds over. He might have had it as an emergency spare . . . and who knew that the boys would play a 22 minute SOYCD? The taper was obviously sitting in the field, which is evident by the many shouts of "sit down" from the audience.

It is a nice surprise. This is a very underrated roio. A nice upgrade compared to "Last Night In Stafford". Dogs is complete here. Compared to "cass 1 or 2" this sound quite good too. I suspect some kind of small compression or NR, but I can not trace it with spectrum analyses. There is definitely less hiss and buzzing noise is not present on Flesh Animalisation.

Comments:
Who knows who gave a title "Black Side Of The Night" to this recording?
Maybe suggested by the Gilmour's riff on Money ...well, this is the Zurich Feb.
4 master tape often used as source for other releases including fillers ...
indeed the recording is not complete (as it seems).
Dogs and SOYCD (6-9) are missing a great portion, WTTM begins cut and above all
Pigs is completely missing ;-(
I do ignore who put that Pigs from Berlin (30 Jan.) as filler here and (and why ?!!)
the MoLM made the same choice for its release With Bright Knives, actually they got
this source for their release I guess and this Pigs was here already included.
This Pigs is from Berlin but from a different source than Absolut Floyd (the MoLM
claims to have sourced the Pigs used on With Bright Knives from Absolut Floyd, but
it can't be) ... this Pigs sounds extraordinary better than the one on Absolut
Floyd  (sounds as recorded nearer to the stage and audience chats are actually
different). I wonder where this better source of the Berlin 30 Jan. show is roaming,
does it include the complete performance? ..who'll know ...Pigs is the only song
available from that recorder so far and appears on these two releases only.
SQ: SPECTACULAR!
Few recordings not radio/SB sourced would deserve a SUP, but I'd feel to give a SUP -
to this one, even if incomplete ... I like it a lot really

Germanic Pigs ...

The new Pink Floyd album, Animals, was out and the tour was on its way. Fans and foes alike were eager to hear the new material and begin the endless debate of how this record compared to the previous works. Below are excerpts from a Melody Maker article published on February 5th 1977. It recounts the experience of the Pink Floyd concert in Frankfurt on January 27th, just days before this Vienna show from February 1st.

“... ’At the end of the last tour we felt as if we could hardly bear to see each other again, but now it feels very good’ (Nick Mason). Pink Floyd, allegedly the most unwilling touring band at the top of the rock tree, were on the road again, and things were coming together quite nicely ... it had been an evening totally without mishaps. There were 12,000 natives packed into Frankfurt’s Festhalle ...

The band’s special effects dept sill hadn’t got the highpoint of their contribution to the show quite right yet. In the middle of the Pigs section of the tunes from their new album, a gigantic inflated porker is meant to fly over the PA, emerging out of a cloud of smoke, clearing the stacks by a few inches, and making a circuit of the hall over the heads of the audience. This is no cuddly pink pig with a curly tail, such as the one that flew between the chimneys of Battersea power station to publicise the Animals album ... this is a real mother of a sow, its snout rippling with animosity, grey as pigsty muck, its eyes lit up from inside, glowing red and baleful. Well, Mr. Pig made it over the stack all right but the trouble was with the smoke. The first three nights of the tour they couldn’t get enough product out of the rented fog machine so they tried a smoke bomb instead. That worked rather too well for comfort, filling the hall with billowing clouds of throat-strangling murk ... full marks for impact ... oh well, back to the drawing board.

Where it really counted – the sound - there seemed to be few problems. A couple of small examples: as Roger Waters plays, an oscilloscope onstage displays the waveform of his music, so that he can see immediately if his bass begins to slip out of tune. All the time he plays, he wears headphones for onstage fold back ... and every microphone on Mason’s drum kit goes through a noise gate triggered by the drum it is ‘miking’ so that the microphone is only on when he hits that particular skin, cutting out sound spillage and making the drum rhythms come through crisp and clean. It all adds up to the clearest sound I have ever heard in a hall this size – much better than the beginning of the Stones’ tour in the same hall last year.

The lighting, too, gets the same sort of techno-flash treatment. In addition to the usual banks of genie towers and the follow-spots, now requisite even with minor league bands, they have two enormous ‘cherry picker’ mobile gantries, similar to the snorkel towers used for fighting skyscraper fires ... hovering a few feet over Dave Gilmour’s head. For instance, as he howls out that searing pedal-steel solo in ‘Welcome To The Machine’, it bathes him in a crucible-red spotlight ... also ... towards the end of ‘Wish You Were Here’ a huge mirrored glass sunburst comes up from the back of the stage and starts revolving. I’m here to tell you that the Floyd’s use of mirror glass puts all the competition firmly into the Stone Age of visual theatre ...

For these live gigs, Floyd have been augmented by two fine musicians, guitarist ‘Snowy’ White and saxophone and keyboard player Dick Parry. Wisely, and graciously, Gilmour doesn’t use Snowy merely for back-up rhythm guitar work, but gives him a few solos, of which he makes good use ...

Pink Floyd are not innovative, really, as is constantly pointed out by the disenchanted voices among us, but then they never claimed to be. Their use of electronics adds little to the musical vocabulary. Their melodies are tonal, their harmonies consonant, their rhythms four-square and almost flat-footed. And yet somehow, using all these well-tried devices they nevertheless indicate widening horizons. On the other hand, they are not really the greatest live band in the world. They make few obvious attempts to communicate, a failure which the proliferation of visual effects is presumably meant to fill. The improved sound, if anything, heightens the sense of being at home listening to the album. If you close your eyes for an instant, and while the solos are longer, the greater freedom doesn’t usually produce anything of greater moment than in the narrower compass of the album ... and yet, here again; their very ordinariness on stage puts their work back into a human perspective. If they were the proverbial super human titans bestriding the auditorium like colossal, they would be unbearable.

After the gig, they are quite accessible, lounging around upstairs finishing the beer and cake, (since) its Nick Mason’s 33rd birthday. He nods thoughtfully when we speak of my theory that the last three albums fall together as a coherent body of work ... ’of course, we didn’t plan it that way, but it just seemed that with Dark Side we somehow got lucky and things began to fall into place. This one – Animals - is really my favorite ... and the only one I like playing’.”

RE-UP: Pink Floyd live in Dortmund 1977 - 2CD - January 23

Pink Floyd
Westfallenhalle, Dortmund
23 January 1977

Primary source: 'Animals Tour Debut' (Digital Floyd) (rec 1) (audience - recorder 3)

Secondary source: 'Bugger's Eyes' (rec 3) (audience - recorder 3)

A personal project combining these two sources to make up the complete show. I used rec 1 for the primary source because it sounded a bit more well-balanced to my ears compared to the thinner-sounding rec 3; rec 3 was used to fill the missing pieces. Aside from that, both sources were in need of a great deal of speed correction, particularly rec 1. Anyone familiar with rec 1 can no doubt recall the horrendous speed problems during 'Pigs' in particular.

Here are the details of the work done to create this:

- MAJOR speed correction on ATD throughout - was particularly bad during P3DO
- increased volume on rec 3 to better match ATD
- blended in roughly the first 50 seconds of Sheep from rec 3
- blended in roughly 20 seconds from rec 3 between Sheep and POTW1
- blended in roughly 55 seconds from rec 3 between Dogs and POTW2
- blended in roughly 20 seconds from rec 3 between POTW2 and P3DO
- blended in roughly 30 seconds from rec 3 after P3DO
- blended in roughly 30 seconds from rec 3 before SOYCD 1-5
- blended in roughly 35 seconds from rec 3 between WttM and HAC
- blended in roughly 8 seconds from rec 3 between HAC and WYWH
- blended in roughly 25 seconds from rec 3 between WYWH and SOYCD 6-9
- blended in the end of SOYCD 6-9 from rec 3 and performed major speed correction
- removed a few minutes of crowd noise from rec 3 before the encore and then blended ATD back in during the tune-up before Money

This was a very time-consuming endeavor mostly due to the speed problems, but this significant concert warranted the effort. Hope you enjoy it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've had this on Scotch 207 reel from a trade shortly after the concert.
It's incomplete, there's a warble at the beginning of Shine On Pt. 6-10 and a glitch around 3:13 - 3:19.  Nice sounding tape, though.
The tape in circulation has a cut in You've Gotta Be Crazy, and no such cut is present in this recording.
