=======================================================================================

1. WHAT IS IT?
Revisiting UMMAGUMMA as if it was a band-album, including left-overs and alternate versions, plus some home-made edits. Giving it a brandnew concept. (So this could have been PF's first concept album!)

2. WHY?
The idea for this project came in mind when I considered it was a pity that "The Embryo" and "Biding my Time" were recorded for Ummagumma but left out in spite of the concept of making it a 'four-men-solo album'. My first thought was then to burn a copy of Ummagumma for myself, just including those songs at the end of the album. But then I thought: "Why not making it an extended alternate version?" Inspiration also came from Muabdib's studio remix of "The Man & The Journey" (which I recommand!) and  the enhanced Wall version "Every Brick In The Wall".
It's obvious that the original concept of Ummagumma didn't work out like the band wished it to. Quotes from the band members are clear on this subject:

"We all believed it was going to be one of the best things we'd ever put onto record, which I think it was at that time, but the stuff on the album isn't half as good as we can play." -Rick
"For me, it was just an experiment. I think it was badly recorded, the studio side could have been done better. We're thinking of doing it again." -David
"This was absolutely not a band album. The live stuff sounds incredibly antiquated now [...]. We were looking for new ways of constructing an album, although I think what this demonstrates is that our sum is always better than the parts." -Nick

3. WHAT HAS BEEN DONE?
Well, I took the liberty to get rid of that solo-concept, and tried to mix what Ummagumma might have been if it was a real teamwork, giving it a different concept. I don't pretend I improved it, but I wished to include left-outs, unreleased material (principally from ZP, but which fits perfectly in the spirit of Ummagumma) and alternate versions. I had plenty of material (of different quality) to choose from, for 1969 was probably their most prolific year. Therefore I used as far as possible the best sources for those alternate versions, but except for the Zabriskie Point outtakes, quality failed in most of the cases. It's a pity even the audio rip of Grantchester Meadows from the Harvested's KQED DVD is only 19OKbps, hissy and had an annoying hum in the beginning. Other sources had less hiss but much more microphone noise! I tried the best I could to erase this hum and de-hiss it a bit withoput denaturating the audio spectrum with Noise Reduction.

Another thing I permitted myself is to rename some tracks in order to give it the mythological concept I conceived for the occasion. I took inspiration by the example of Sysyphus and Oenone and gave Greek mythological references to the whole album, hence Cronus instead of Eugene, Selene (goddess of the moon) for Moonhead, and a Grand Vizier's Garden party which became an authentic Roman orgie! I recommend you to read the liner notes while listening, for I tried to make it more or less conceptual with a storyline. In contrary, I left the original titles for the live set.
The choice of including 'Careful...' is less obvious, since this is a 68 song. But, I found it a shame that only the single version was available on official sources, and no version of this tune appears on the regular albums. This december 69 take of Careful for the ZP soundtrack is radically different and much closer to what we use to hear on live roio's. The sound effects aer from the film itself, only the stereo effects for the footsteps and the riding car are mine. Other things that could be considered as 'sins' to some purists: I messed a lot with Sysyphus, integrating 'The Riot Scene' from ZP (aka The Violent Sequence, early Us & Them), 'Several Species...' backwards and the Pict rant without animal noises in it. Hence 'Several Species..' has

disappeared from the tracklist! But figure out in case of teamwork, Roger would maybe have done the same. Moreover you can clearly hear Roger rant more or less in the same part on the live version of Sysyphus (a fact I discovered AFTER mixing the studio album!!!)
The same 'dammages' occured to Nick's piece.
Figure out Syd came to help him get this piece a little more attractive!

4. WHAT ABOUT THE LIVE SET?
The live set isn't a gathering of alternate takes of what was originally on the live set of Ummagumma, but more what it would have sounded like if the band had once played (my) Ummagumma live. So here is a REAL live Ummagumma album, assembled from the most "mythic"

shows from 69-70 where the Floyd performed their strangest bits with an incredible energy. Especially on that night in Hamburg 70-11-14, Roger was in an incredibly talkative/rantic mood! Notice that powerful 'Embryo' including some jungle noises à la 'Several Species...' and 'Pow R. Toc H.' Alas and again, the shows featuring the rarest tracks like 'Moonhead' or 'Sysyphus' were badly recorded, and most sources are hissy, muffed, etc. The huge quality difference between the different sources I used, forced me

to use fades between some tracks, which I don't like but was the only way to make it sound acceptable. The SQ skips are more particulary noticeable in the 'meddley' I made.

A special note about 'The Narrow Way Part 3' though. The best recording is the one from the Amsterdam venue of 'The Man & The Journey'
. Musically, however, Dave's vocals are probably the worst he ever did in his whole life! His voice fails on all live performance of 'The Narrow Way'. That's why I choose this recording from the London premiere of 'The Man & The Journey': it's not the best source, but at least the vocals are barely audible, which is not a real loss in this case!

--------------------------------------

This bootleg was compiled from the best available raw sources and was not stolen from other people's compilations. The audio was remastered from an audiophile standpoint. Mono material appears in true mono. There was no additional echo or stereo ambience added. Noise reduction was not used on any material. Hiss was often reduced through equalization. I have tried to present the best sonic experience possible without compromising the integrity of the source material at hand. The final result is the ultimate Syd bootleg. Even hardcore fans should be able to find something worthwhile within.

This second version from August 2012 has new sonic upgrades of Tracks 03, 09, 12, 13, 14 & 15. The intro to Track 01 has been patched with missing material from an inferior source. Tracks 10 & 11 have also had additional speed correction.

FLAC: Pink Floyd "High Time" - 1CD - live Rome 1968 & London 1969 - soundboard

Pink Floyd Mega-rare restored vinyl "High Time"  Rome Italy 1968-05-06 and London 1969-05-12 - Features "The Narrow Way" with vocals, superb sound!

Continuing my never-to-be-quenched thirst for vinyl, here's a great offering from the European anti-CD label Sodium Haze Records. Pressed in perhaps batches of 50-100 pieces (correct me if I'm wrong there), your chances of snagging one are very limited... you'd better not blink or it will go away.

Side one features three tunes from the "Rome Goes Pop! program(me): Astronomie Domine, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, and Interstellar Overdrive. The first two tracks are sourced from a VPRO-FM radio rebroadcast on 1988-04-29. The third track is an audio rip from the television broadcast on ARD TV (West Germany) from 1968-05-18. The quality is simply stunning.

Side two is pre-FM sourced from the program(me) John Peel's Night Ride: Granchester Meadows (Daybreak), Cymbaline (Nightmare), Green Is The Colour (The Beginning/Beset By Creatures Of The Deep), and The Narrow Way. The last track is of mention as it contains vocals. For those of you unfamiliar with the extra titles, these tracks were performed on the road during 1969 as part of a concept piece "The Man and The Journey". The versions presented here are notable for their differences from the normal concert routine.

The sequence of songs on this album are simply superb. Hope you like it.

40 years after the last Pink Floyd studio session for the BBC, Harvested is proud to present this upgraded version of "BBC Archives 1967-1969".

This release required a lot of work and took more than 6 months to complete. The purpose was to present each track in the best possible quality. The process was long because it was performed on a track by track basis. For each song, we had to compare many different sources in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each version and then decide which one(s) to work on. The mastering work was done very carefully, trying to repair every flaw that could be corrected... and there were a lot (tape warble, crackles, drop-outs, incorrect speed, etc).

Instead of giving all the details for each single track (we want to avoid sterile debates about lineage and sources), we prefer the results to speak for itself. We think people should judge by their ears; listen to your sonically-preferred versions and compare them to the ones on this new Harvested release. We can confidently say that every track is - sonically speaking - an upgrade compared to the best previously circulating version, including the master transfer of the 25Jun68 session (which offered complete versions but from a damaged mastertape) and the recent Celestial Voices tracks from the 12May69 session.

We made the choice not to include the various DJ intros in order to focus on the music. There are some exceptions such as Reaction In G and Set The Controls from the 25Sep67 session, but for the remainder the DJ comments were considered too distracting and so we edited them out (e.g. the Tomorrow's World tracks). Also, it's important to note that all tracks are presented in true mono, the way they were mixed by the BBC (there's no "fake stereo" nor "sound expanding" effect).

This collection not only includes the sessions for BBC radio, but also studio sessions for BBC TV shows and documentaries making it more complete than the previous releases. The number of tracks is now 30; 14 are covering the 1967 sessions with Syd (on CD 1) and 16 are dedicated to the 1968-1969 era with David (on CD 2).

Cuesheets are included for those who like to burn CDRs with all the required text info.

The sound quality here is excellent.

This is taken from the stereo broadcast.

Even "Comfortably Numb" and "Run Like Hell" are taken from the broadcast, as they sound
slightly different than the "clean" versions on the official "Knebworth - The Album".

It was a live broadcast, so there are some imperfections in the mix
(the debut vocals on "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", "Wish You Were Here" and "Comfortably Numb"
are first too low mixed, then suddently perfectly audible).

Notes:
Very few audience whistles were present in both sources suggesting that the two tapers were quite a distance apart.
Sound effects bounce between the channels during Learning To Fly.
Two different clock chimes heard at the beginning of Time, one in each channel.
Some On The Run sound effects travel from one channel to the other.
Interesting improv during instrumental section of Welcome To The Machine.
Bass solo during Money.
Bass lead during One Slip.
2CD Burn option: CD 1: Tracks 1-12, CD 2: Tracks 13-24

Taper 1 Notes:
Excellent sounding upfront recording despite a fair number of flaws. At the beginning of each set the microphones were being positioned during the first minute of each song. There was some static, channel dropouts and microphone bumps during this that I tried to fix. Money had a 1 sec dropout that was removed. A few other smaller dropouts were removed as well. Overall a very good sounding recording. I lost my previous transfer (from 2004) in a HD crash. I did the transfer from my friend's pcm as well in 1995.

This release has originally recorded from an FM Broadcast on 97.3 KRQR in San Francisco. This comes from the cassette masters that a friend of mine recorded sometime in 1990. The tapes have gone through hell and back including dampness and moisture build up from being in storage for so long.

I'm dissapointed that Shine On You Crazy Diamond was not on this recording. Unfortunately, I was not at this show and cannot confirm if it was played or not - as I arrived into the Bay Area in 1991. Although a release from the next day by T, shows that it was played (on the 23rd.) Maybe the entire show was too long for the station to broadcast. One thing I will say is that there is a really funky version of Money, and alot of popping on the bass. Very interesting show indeed.

Before danlynch complains about the quality, While transferring this into digital format I noticed that the tapes were in poor condition and this recording is not the best. It's over-modulated in a few areas, there are a few pops and even some drop outs directly from the cassette and there are also a few warbly areas probably caused by moisture and dampness because these tapes were misplaced and in storage for many years. Run Like Hell is not listenable after 3/4 through the song.

This is my very first attempt at seeding a show from cassette and as a future project, if someone with better equipment, and more experience would like to re-release this, please contact me. I'm just throwing this show out here for grabs as a filler in the tie being because I want to see what else surfaces. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another poorly planned, corporate cut-throat, maneuver and see a better copy of this show magically appear from danlynch and his butt-buddys within the next few days after they find out that this low quality copy was released. Never fails.

Congratulations and many thanks to 78jazz for finding and sharing this very nice sounding recording close to 40 years after it was taped.

Unfortunately we only have the second set and, when asked, the taper didn't reply about whether any more exists. 78jazz thinks this taper possibly had some other unreleased goodies. He asked about Rush, Yes, and the J. Geils Band and received affirmative responses.

My thanks to goldenband for providing the details that follow. The speed is spot on.

I asked goldenband whether we can be certain the recording is from Louisville?

He replied, "It's clearly from June/July 1977 since after Rick's piano solo in SOYCD Part IX, they replaced the synth solo with a guitar solo. As far as I know that only started in June 1977, since the May shows still have the synth solo. Then I compared it to all of the circulating shows from June/July 1977 with SOYCD VI-IX: 1977-06-19, 1977-06-25, 1977-06-27, 1977-06-29, 1977-07-01, 1977-07-02, 1977-07-03, 1977-07-04, 1977-07-06, and none of them matched.

"The later guitar solos tend to start with a rising triplet melody like what we famously hear on 1977-07-02, but the Louisville one begins with a high note that's oddly out of place and is quite distinctive. Snowy also hits a major wrong note when he comes in for his solo turn, at about 7:42.

"The only other possibility is 1977-06-15 which is missing that part of SOYCD 6-9, and I was a bit worried at first since there are some similarities in other parts of the show. But when I loaded the two performances of SOYCD 1-5 up next to each other, it's clear they're from different shows; Rick's noodling before Syd's theme is completely different.

"During the WYWH radio bit a speaker mentions Dixie Highway, which runs through Louisville. That pretty much clinches it.

"It's an interestingly weird show too, or at least set, with a couple very strange events: during WYWH, either Roger is attempting to sing along with Gilmour in a deeply off-kilter way, or there's some kind of effect propagating certain words ("change", "role") back at David after a delay. Very odd."

There is a review in Glenn Povey's Complete Pink Floyd book from the Louisville Courier Journal which is worth reading. It states that 19,000 people attended and the band's quad sound system included 80 400-watt amplifiers. It's not surprising then that the recording has a lot of distortion due to mic overload. The tape was transferred a bit hot and I fixed some digital clipping in iZotope.

I did receive this with the title "Rotterdam 77" but turned out to be the actually "Schaap En Zwijn" (if you mind about the titles). This comes from the same source than the LP Crazy Diamond (Lora Records 459023) that has just the WHWH part of the recording, it's supposed to come from the master, but master or not the original recording doesn't sound spectacular. It's a very good recording, though it doesn't reach the excellence for sure. Some tape noise but correct speed (the LP has a weird speed, really annoying).

Germanic Pigs ...

The new Pink Floyd album, Animals, was out and the tour was on its way. Fans and foes alike were eager to hear the new material and begin the endless debate of how this record compared to the previous works. Below are excerpts from a Melody Maker article published on February 5th 1977. It recounts the experience of the Pink Floyd concert in Frankfurt on January 27th, just days before this Vienna show from February 1st.

“... ’At the end of the last tour we felt as if we could hardly bear to see each other again, but now it feels very good’ (Nick Mason). Pink Floyd, allegedly the most unwilling touring band at the top of the rock tree, were on the road again, and things were coming together quite nicely ... it had been an evening totally without mishaps. There were 12,000 natives packed into Frankfurt’s Festhalle ...

The band’s special effects dept sill hadn’t got the highpoint of their contribution to the show quite right yet. In the middle of the Pigs section of the tunes from their new album, a gigantic inflated porker is meant to fly over the PA, emerging out of a cloud of smoke, clearing the stacks by a few inches, and making a circuit of the hall over the heads of the audience. This is no cuddly pink pig with a curly tail, such as the one that flew between the chimneys of Battersea power station to publicise the Animals album ... this is a real mother of a sow, its snout rippling with animosity, grey as pigsty muck, its eyes lit up from inside, glowing red and baleful. Well, Mr. Pig made it over the stack all right but the trouble was with the smoke. The first three nights of the tour they couldn’t get enough product out of the rented fog machine so they tried a smoke bomb instead. That worked rather too well for comfort, filling the hall with billowing clouds of throat-strangling murk ... full marks for impact ... oh well, back to the drawing board.

Where it really counted – the sound - there seemed to be few problems. A couple of small examples: as Roger Waters plays, an oscilloscope onstage displays the waveform of his music, so that he can see immediately if his bass begins to slip out of tune. All the time he plays, he wears headphones for onstage fold back ... and every microphone on Mason’s drum kit goes through a noise gate triggered by the drum it is ‘miking’ so that the microphone is only on when he hits that particular skin, cutting out sound spillage and making the drum rhythms come through crisp and clean. It all adds up to the clearest sound I have ever heard in a hall this size – much better than the beginning of the Stones’ tour in the same hall last year.

The lighting, too, gets the same sort of techno-flash treatment. In addition to the usual banks of genie towers and the follow-spots, now requisite even with minor league bands, they have two enormous ‘cherry picker’ mobile gantries, similar to the snorkel towers used for fighting skyscraper fires ... hovering a few feet over Dave Gilmour’s head. For instance, as he howls out that searing pedal-steel solo in ‘Welcome To The Machine’, it bathes him in a crucible-red spotlight ... also ... towards the end of ‘Wish You Were Here’ a huge mirrored glass sunburst comes up from the back of the stage and starts revolving. I’m here to tell you that the Floyd’s use of mirror glass puts all the competition firmly into the Stone Age of visual theatre ...

For these live gigs, Floyd have been augmented by two fine musicians, guitarist ‘Snowy’ White and saxophone and keyboard player Dick Parry. Wisely, and graciously, Gilmour doesn’t use Snowy merely for back-up rhythm guitar work, but gives him a few solos, of which he makes good use ...

Pink Floyd are not innovative, really, as is constantly pointed out by the disenchanted voices among us, but then they never claimed to be. Their use of electronics adds little to the musical vocabulary. Their melodies are tonal, their harmonies consonant, their rhythms four-square and almost flat-footed. And yet somehow, using all these well-tried devices they nevertheless indicate widening horizons. On the other hand, they are not really the greatest live band in the world. They make few obvious attempts to communicate, a failure which the proliferation of visual effects is presumably meant to fill. The improved sound, if anything, heightens the sense of being at home listening to the album. If you close your eyes for an instant, and while the solos are longer, the greater freedom doesn’t usually produce anything of greater moment than in the narrower compass of the album ... and yet, here again; their very ordinariness on stage puts their work back into a human perspective. If they were the proverbial super human titans bestriding the auditorium like colossal, they would be unbearable.

After the gig, they are quite accessible, lounging around upstairs finishing the beer and cake, (since) its Nick Mason’s 33rd birthday. He nods thoughtfully when we speak of my theory that the last three albums fall together as a coherent body of work ... ’of course, we didn’t plan it that way, but it just seemed that with Dark Side we somehow got lucky and things began to fall into place. This one – Animals - is really my favorite ... and the only one I like playing’.”

Notes from the Re-Master

There are multiple sources for this master tape with no significant differences between them. All are complete with no gaps in the recording. The sources suggest a reel-to-reel tape player was used for the recording. Either two tapes or one long tape must have been used. The tape speed was a little different between the two sets suggesting that the former may have been the case. After the speed correction, the recording needed repair of the frequency response. Particularly in the left channel, certain frequencies were attenuated and needed a boost to bring them in line with the rest of the spectrum. Once performed, the overall tonality was re-balanced to improve the sound. This required both static and dynamic filters, particularly to address Dave's harsh guitar; a characteristic found throughout this tour.

Channel balance also needed correction. The overall balance was aligned as was the balance in specific segments. There was a frequently occurring brief buzz that was identified and fortunately was amenable to easy repair. Auto-record level circuits were particularly active during this recording. After loud sections, subsequent sections were unduly suppressed and needed to be restored. Similarly, during quiet sections such as the Pigs on the Wing segments, record levels were dropped, even between guitar notes and strums leading to a "door-open"/"door-closed" effect. Dynamic adjustment filters were used to correct this effect, with good results. Dynamic enhancements were used and re-tracking was performed using standard references.

FLAC: Pink Floyd live in Paris 1974 - 2CD - June 24

Pink Floyd Palais De Sports, Paris France 1974-06-24 TheTooleMan's remastering of a fresh transfer from the original reels - major sound improvement!

First of all, I can't go any further without personally thanking TheTooleMan for his great remastering job on this torrent. This was a messy, arduous process that involved trying to separate the music from the tape hiss. To that end, I'd like to offer up the following for discussion.

There is a point in time where frequency response matters less than what sort of musical sound is available for the ear to actually hear. Both of the prior transfers show SA from 20-20000Hz, but this one does not, and to your humble seeder should not. It's purposely cut off at a very low upper frequency just above the end of the recorder's response, leaving the hiss and noise behind. This has the effect of moving the portion of the response which actually contains the music forward. What remained has been EQ'd to bring as many of the sounds out as possible.

To wit (and I'd like your impressions on it): In this particular case, it wasn't what frequencies were on the tape. It was what frequencies contained music. Actually, that's a bit of nonsense to avoid me being blunt about it. What I really mean to say is *to the ears, it sounds a whole lot better, and to hell with the frequency response*.

Dowload it, listen to it, and see if you agree...

Some technical notes: The file sizes are a whole lot smaller this time around. It's believed (though not yet confirmed) this bootleg was remastered into the original mono. The original reels are NOT in stereo. The hiss might have been, but not the music.

This is a 16 bit version.
